Our beloved local baseball team did not always contend, believe it or not. So we had to sell other things: when we went from the American League to the National League (“We’re taking this thing national.”), we trash talked all the new teams we played in print to fuel new rivalries. When Miller Park was coming, we celebrated Milwaukee County Stadium. When Miller Park came, we focused on entertainment. Through it all, we never forgot that hope fueled fandom, and that the over-promise was hype, and hype was inauthentic. Baseball, above all else, win or lose, needed to be fun.
